Inside the Immigration Pipeline
Our two-page paper on Delaney Hall: what families face there and why the information they need is so hard to find.
Why we got involvedPor qué nos involucramos
Before this project, we already volunteered at Eileen Markey's immigration clinics at St. Nicholas of Tolentine in the Bronx. Fordham Law professors meet with families there. Students step in as interpreters and scribes when the families speak Spanish.
When we asked Eileen where help was needed most, she named places across the immigration system. We chose Delaney Hall. She connected us with Pax Christi New Jersey, whose lead organizer walked us through what families face at the gate.
The first thing she named was the missing waiting room. She also told us the facility doesn't share basic rules, like the dress code. When we searched online, we found almost nothing written for these families.
What we've doneLo que hemos hecho
We printed a four-page pamphlet in English and Spanish. On the International Day of Hospitality, Fordham University students helped us hand out 300 copies during a procession to St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church.
Eileen now shares our guide with the dozens of immigrants she works with. We kept hearing that families needed help long before anyone was detained, with court dates and work permits. That is why the pamphlet became Agenda Nueva York.
Why it matters to usPor qué nos importa
Our faith is the reason we started. Gustavo Gutiérrez, the Peruvian priest known as the father of liberation theology, taught that God has a special love for the poor and the oppressed. The Church calls this the preferential option for the poor.
Gutiérrez saw theology as a second step that comes after the work itself. So we went to the clinics and listened first. We wrote this guide second.
The U.S. Catholic bishops teach that a country may control its borders, as long as it does so with justice and mercy. A mother waiting in the snow with her children, because the building has no room for her, does not meet that standard.
"He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives… to set at liberty those who are oppressed.""Me envió a anunciar la liberación a los cautivos… a dar la libertad a los oprimidos."
